Dan & Annie's
Summer Adventure 2006

August 4th, 2006:

We’re still in Zion National Park, Utah.

For some reason, we decided to try climbing Angel’s Landing today. Here it is in poster form:

And here it is from the bottom, rising 1,500 feet above the valley floor to an elevation of 5,800 feet.

The climb started out like this…:

with views like this:

But quickly turned into this. We’ll be climbing up through that notch.

To get a sense of size here, that diagonal cut you see in the center…

is where Annie is standing here:

And here is the view off to her right, looking down to the river where we started:

A little further up, in "Walter's Wiggles" now…

Almost there…

And finally we make it to the ridge. Here’s Annie at the top of the ridge:

And here’s the view off to her left. That’s the parking area down below:

And here’s the view of that same ridge from the parking area:

From the ridge, here is a view of the final ascent.

It is knife-edge, in some places only six feet wide, with more than a

thousand foot drop on both sides.

The ranger told us that many people turn back at this point, and that

more than one person has been killed falling from here. After much

discussion, we decided to give it a try:

Here we go.

And this is as far as we made it.

It was just too damn scary. We decided we’d had enough.

It was quite a climb. Disappointing in that we did not achieve the summit,

but a day that all of us will remember for a long time.

That’s all for now,

Dan, Annie & Chris
