Summer Adventure 2006
September 5th, 2006:
Mt. Elbert in Colorado, at 14,433’, is the second highest peak in the continental U.S.
Today we climbed Mt. Democrat (14,148’). Considered one of the easier of Colorado’s
54 Fourteener’s, it is still less than 300 feet shy of Mt. Elbert’s elevation.

We left the camper at the trailhead, at about 12,000’.

It was 25 degrees when we started hiking (7am).

There are sixteen cars plus our camper parked at the far end of the lake
down there. It’s so far away you can’t even see them from half way up:

The entire hike was above tree line, steep and rocky.

Here we are at just under 14,000 feet:

We can see the top now, and that’s a mountain goat out there eating snow:

The final push…

We made it!!!

And head back down:
